Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner
| The Leadership Academy addresses the knowledge gap on women’s rights, gender, access to justice and the law and strengthens institutional capacity to effectively use legal and feminist approaches, including strategic interest litigation, public interest litigation, and other strategic interventions, such as amicus curiae to effectively advocate for supportive enabling environment that promotes women’s rights, access to justice and gender equality. During the Leadership Academy’s first two years of existence, we ran two series of Continuing Legal Education trainings through our virtual platform. The trainings were attended by practicing advocates who sought to increase their legal knowledge.
The Leadership Academy also hosted a series of informal conversations on important topics regarding personal and professional growth and raised social consciousness about key issues such as the plight of women in cohabiting relationships. A mentorship programme was also established under the Leadership Academy which paired 10 young feminists with more experienced activists for mutual encouragement and cross-generational learning. In 2024, the Leadership Academy trained 20 women lawyers from Ethiopia and Sudan to become trainers on the topics of policy and legislative advocacy; Strategic Interest Litigation and the documentation of conflict-related sexual violence. The Leadership Academy also developed content to train lawyers practising in Ethiopia and Sudan on feminist legal aid service provision. The Academy furthermore enabled the training of 300 employers in the Rwenzori region of Uganda on gender-based discrimination and violence in the workplace. |
Description the volunteer mandate
| For a period of 12 months, the growth of the FIDA-Uganda Leadership Academy was supported by an experienced lawyer and human rights researcher from Switzerland. From March 2025, we will have a vacancy for a training development specialist to join our Leadership Academy and support the development of our gender-responsive training materials. Such an expert will be needed in the implementation of our Gender Equality and Inclusion Fund (GEIF) grant, which envisions training of women community legal volunteers with disabilities in Arua on advocacy, leadership, gender-responsive justice and climate justice.
As part of their role, the Volunteer will also be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of a gender-sensitive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) approach. This includes designing gender-responsive indicators, ensuring data is disaggregated by sex and other relevant factors, and engaging women and marginalized groups in the M&E process. The Volunteer will help assess the impact of FIDA-Uganda’s programs on women’s empowerment, track the response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and ensure that feedback mechanisms are inclusive and accessible. By doing so, they will contribute to adapting and strengthening the organization’s strategies to promote gender equality and empower women in all aspects of its work. Therefore, FIDA-Uganda requests for the placement of a Volunteer to fill the role of Programme Officer under our Leadership Academy, who will provide technical expertise in the development of our training content and provide technical capacity in the strengthening of a gender-responsive approach to M&E. |
