As I begin this journey as the new Executive Director of Crossroads International, I wanted to share with you some words of gratitude and a call to action.
Thank you to the countless volunteers, donors, advocates, local partners, staff and other stakeholders who have raised their voices over the past 61 years to make a difference for women and girls, boys and men around the world. Today your continued efforts are supporting Crossroads to reach tens of thousands of women and girls in Africa and South America who are among the most vulnerable so that they could have the confidence and opportunity for a better life.
And to the women and girls who are engaged in with Crossroads programs today, thank you for your leadership and courage. You are our bright lights that guide the way for others to see it is possible for all women and girls — everywhere — to reach their full potential.
One of the reasons I am so proud to be joining the Crossroads family is because of its long tenure on the global stage of standing for a new future for an equitable and sustainable world. Standing for anything that currently does not exist in the world takes something. To CONTINUE to stand over time through thick and thin with all of the challenges that are inherent in our work — is extraordinary. It is an honour to step into a leadership role with such a committed and undauntable organization.
The challenges of our work will continue. As I write this, I am preparing for my first day on the job which will take place at the largest gathering of women leaders in the world — at the Women Deliver conference in Vancouver, Canada, June 3rd – 6th. This event presents a historic opportunity to catapult forward the advancement of equality for women and girls everywhere.
At the same time, the backdrop for the Conference is a world that houses great division — a world where the basic vision of equality for many poses a threat. This is where action — YOUR action can make a difference. What we have learned repeatedly is that if we do not engage in dialogue around women and girls’ rights, their rights may disappear.
My request is to use YOUR voice today to empower women and girls to become leaders and live free from violence. Do that in whatever way moves you – tweet, blog, talk to your neighbour, talk to your President, volunteer, travel, start a company and LISTEN to those who have different views. It is going to be through engaging a wide berth of partners that we will transform our tomorrow, today.
Thank you in advance for your partnership and for your participation for a world united in equality.
Heather Shapter,
Executive Director – Crossroads International
