Main Responsibilities

  • Pitch new content to program/project managers and contribute to planning the content calendar.  
  • Co-generate a consistent stream of interviews, statistics, imagery, and films from DUNK programs/projects through the following methods:  
  • Co-develop strong working relationships with DUNK project coordinators, field staff, and volunteers, regularly communicating about the work in each DUNK location.  
  • Assist in training field staff/volunteers who may not have expertise in communication to enhance their ability to create comms content.  
  • Work to establish efficient operating procedures for content flow from DUNK sites, including managing the risks, ethics, and consent in the content gathering.  
  • Commission photographers and oversee the process from tendering to captioning and storing outputs.  
  • Collect, verify, condense, and organize content received from DUNK sites and partners for dissemination.  
  • Conduct interviews with DUNK staff and community members to collect new content. 

 CONTENT CO-CREATION, INCLUDING: 

  • Producing compelling content for various platforms, including the DUNK website, email campaigns, and social media.  
  • Conducting basic video editing for website and social media content.  
  • Creating social media content such as reels and stories.  
  • Managing external designers and print processes for projects like the Annual Report and fundraising campaigns.  
  • Assisting in the measurement and performance reporting of digital marketing initiatives, focusing on audience engagement, conversions, and website traffic.  
  • Write press releases and media alerts that engage philanthropists, thought leaders, the press, and the general public
  • Support communications related to GBV prevention, gender equality and women’s empowerment, and other gender equality and visibility needs.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, International Relations, or a related field. 
  • Prior experience in donor communications at a nonprofit, media outlet, marketing or advertising agency. 
  • A self-motivated individual who works well in a team environment. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • A quick and adaptable thinker who can pivot quickly when necessary. 
  • Proficiency in written, oral, and interpersonal communication. 
  • Exceptional report writing and presentation abilities. 
  • Proficient with technology. 

Project description and context: 

Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas. 

The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence. 

Description of the partner

DUNK was established in 2010 and works to nurture vulnerable groups through sports to become the voice of change in their communities through various action-led initiatives. DUNK has created safe community spaces to promote the right to play and to nurturing children’s and youth competences through sports and education. The organization currently operates in 7 locations in Accra and Tamale.

Description the volunteer mandate

DUNK is looking for a volunteer who will be able to identify compelling narratives through engaging conversations with their program teams. The volunteer will have expertise in drawing out captivating interviews and imagery with ability to convey stories to their audience effectively.  

The volunteer will support the implementation of insightful communication strategies and contribute to the overarching direction of DUNK’s campaigns; collaborate closely with the DUNK staff, beneficiaries, junior volunteers, and report to the head of communications; and communicate regularly with DUNK teams located in other areas and foster positive relationships with colleagues across different time zones and with varying priorities. 

Eligibility criteria 

    •  Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada. 
    • Willing to conduct fundraising and public engagement activities before, during and after the placement 
    • Share the commitment of preventing and addressing sexual misconduct 
    • In good physical and mental health (medical examination required) 
    • The volunteer needs to bring their own computer. 
    • The volunteer must be available to attend an online pre-departure training from 20 – 28 June 2023

Personalized support before, during and after the mandate provided by an experienced and welcoming team. The Crossroads’ experience includes the following: 

  • Daily living allowance (depending of the country of assignment)  
  • Plane ticket and local transport 
  • Pre-assignment online training.
