Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description the volunteer mandate
This mandate focuses on developing comprehensive environmental sustainability policies tailored to the operational and programmatic realities of the partner organizations. The volunteer will conduct an organizational assessment to identify gaps and opportunities in current environmental practices, policies, and strategies. Based on the findings, the volunteer will design policies and frameworks that address climate change adaptation, environmental risk mitigation, and resource efficiency, ensuring alignment with global environmental standards and donor requirements.
Capacity-building will be a key component of this mandate. The volunteer will facilitate training sessions and workshops to equip staff with knowledge and tools to integrate environmental sustainability into their daily operations and programming. This will include practical training on climate adaptation, mitigation strategies, and eco-friendly practices, empowering staff to take ownership of sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the volunteer will support the development of tools and guidelines to mainstream environmental sustainability across all programs and projects.
To foster long-term impact, the volunteer will collaborate with leadership teams to embed sustainability into strategic planning and decision-making processes. By promoting a culture of environmental responsibility, the mandate will enable ECYDO, NEWA, and Progynist Ethiopia to demonstrate accountability, resilience, and innovation in addressing climate-related challenges. The organizations will also be better positioned to engage with donors, partners, and communities as leaders in sustainable development.
The ultimate goal of this mandate is to build the capacity of ECYDO, NEWA, and Progynist Ethiopia to adopt environmentally sustainable practices, align with global standards, and strengthen their organizational resilience. By addressing critical gaps in environmental policies and fostering climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, this mandate will contribute to the broader objectives of the Volunteer Cooperation Program. This work is essential for ensuring that the partner organizations can deliver impactful, sustainable programs while responding effectively to the environmental challenges faced by the communities they serve.
