Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner
Imbita SWFT stands as a beacon of empowerment since its establishment in 1991. Imbita is committed to unlocking the potential of Swazi individuals who aspire to thrive.
Imbita envisions a world where every individual possesses the means to bring their ideas to fruition—a world where the transformation of livelihoods transcends mere fantasy and becomes a palpable actuality.
Imbitas impact extends far beyond mere financial aid. They recognize that true success necessitates more than just financial support; hence, they provide comprehensive business training and assistance to endow individuals with the requisite skills and knowledge for success. By empowering women and youth to seize control of their financial destiny, to transform individual lives and catalyze a ripple effect that uplifts entire communities.
Description the volunteer mandate
Imbita intends to establish an in-house Gender Desk aimed at advancing gender equality within its operations. The primary objectives of this initiative include providing training to staff on gender mainstreaming, conducting gender audits, and designing a comprehensive gender training program for both internal staff and clients. Additionally, the Gender Desk will be tasked with addressing the multifaceted challenges encountered by Imbita’s clients in the wake of the organization’s economic empowerment endeavors. These challenges manifest in various forms, such as gender-based violence (GBV), feelings of inadequacy among men, difficulties in managing resources generated by women-owned businesses, and disparities in decision-making power within households. For instance, female participants in agricultural ventures often lack land ownership and rely on family-owned land for farming. Unfortunately, conflicts arise when women’s economic activities lead to jealousy or exploitation within their families, resulting in the revocation of land access or business premises. Furthermore, instances occur where husbands redistribute assets, including land or shops previously allocated to their wives, to new spouses. The establishment of the Gender Desk aims to equip Imbita staff with the necessary skills to effectively address these gender-related challenges within the communities they serve. This includes strategies for sensitizing and engaging husbands to foster mutual appreciation and support for Imbita’s interventions among both men and women. By promoting dialogue and understanding, the Gender Desk endeavors to mitigate harmful practices and promote equitable outcomes for all stakeholders involved.
The organization will also necessitate assistance in integrating gender considerations throughout its organizational structure and strategic framework. This entails establishing gender-specific indicators within social performance management, unequivocally promoting participation and empowerment within microfinance groups, advocating for women’s property rights within program initiatives, addressing instances of gender-based violence, and formulating a robust framework for ensuring gender-equitable consumer protection measures.
