Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner
boMake works with women and youth in 12 artisan groups across 3 of the 4 regions in the country. Some of these communities are over 150 kilometres away from our offices. We have therefore established a framework enabling young people to take an active role in the development of their communities. These young people will be crucial towards developing innovative ideas and projects for socio-economic development as well as implementation of projects withing their communities through support from boMake. Through this mandate, we will capacitate young people ensuring they are well equipped to take an active role. Due to limited resources, boMake needs support in building capacity for our Emerging Leaders. This is important to enhance the technical ability of Emerging Leaders as well as to enhance their personal skills such as leadership and communications. Having confident, informed and active young people will play a vital role towards enhancing the resilience of their communities across socio-economic, environmental and political landscapes. A testament to that was having an artisan and a young person who was a beneficiary to our bursary program voted into office as Chiefdom Development Officers in their respective constituencies during the 2018 elections. The same artisan has been holding the position of group leader in one of the 12 artisan groups
Description the volunteer mandate
The volunteer will be working with our programs coordinator who is responsible for project implementation, management and monitoring. Our programs coordinator has been working with artisans and youth for the past 5 years across all the thematic areas. The volunteer will also work with four Emerging Leaders from the communities building their capacity around project management. This will include working with them in developing projects management tools and systems as well as mentoring them on the use of the tools.
