Project description and context:

Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.

The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.

Description of the partner

Fair and Square needs a resource mobilisation database that will enable the organization to identify specific targeted donors for funding opportunities. Fair and Square needs a specialist that has excellent knowledge of potential donors, their eligibility criteria, and dates that funding opportunities open.

Economic empowerment of women is vital to the national wellbeing of Eswatini. Swazi women only gained independence in 2006 before which time women had the legal status of minor children. Fair and Square believes the best, and only way to sustainable livelihoods is to advance the status of women within our country through economic empowerment. Fair and Square also facilitates health, wellness and educational support including well established peer educator programs in HIV, domestic violence prevention, and personal financial management training and mentoring.

According to Ngwira (2010), female-headed households are poorer than male-headed households in terms of income and more often they have fewer means of moving out of poverty. In addition, they have lower access to inputs, credit, extension services, and land. In Eswatini, women are particularly vulnerable to poverty.

Constitutionally, women can own and control land and their finances. However, traditional social systems discriminate severely against them and often bar them from owning and controlling land. In rural areas, women have less access to education (IFAD 2007). In the context of an agriculture-based economy, these in general lead to female-headed households being poorer than those headed by men (Source: The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Southern Africa www.iita.org).
