Project description and context:
Crossroads International’s 2020-2027 Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) entitled Championing Gender Equality Together, funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), will engage Canadian women and men, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions. Collectively these Gender Equality Champions constitute a global community of strong change agents and advocates for the advancement of gender equality both in Canada and overseas.
The Project aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence, which are the culmination of unequal and discriminatory power relations entrenched in society. Crossroads will address the root causes of gender-based inequalities and discrimination through a multidimensional holistic approach in the VCP that will, 1) promote women’s rights; 2) advance access to justice and the reduction of gender-based violence (GBV), 3) promote equal representation of women and men, and 4) target inequalities that limit women’s ability to participate in and benefit from economic activities. Crossroads applies a rights-based approach to programming, which extends to promoting, protecting, and defending women’s rights, including strengthening the capacity of women’s rights organizations to participate in and influence policy formulation and hold accountable those who have a duty to act.
Partner Description
Kilimanjaro Women Information Exchange & Community Organization (KWIECO) is a national level registered indigenous NGO working in Tanzania mainland with head office in Moshi, Kilimanjaro. The goal is to promote human rights and gender. KWIECO has a long working experience in rural communities, strategic collaboration with the local government authorities, including Regional Commissioners, District Executive Directors, Ward Executive Officers, Medical Officers, Community Development Officers, Social Welfare Officers, Police Gender Desk Officers, Journalists, Influential Women and Religious Leaders. KWIECO’s main goal is to contribute to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal – goal 1 No Poverty, goal 3 Good Health and Well-Being, goal 5 Gender Equality, and goal 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – through increased access to justice for all in particular women and children.
Main responsibilities
- Strengthen the communication system of KWIECO with their stakeholders and improve their visibility in and outside Tanzania by developing new strategies.
- Increase capacity of the KWIECO team on a sustainable communications strategy
- Create diverse communication packages for each targeted group of the organization
- Increase visibility of KWIECO’s work via social media.
- Contribute to the documentation and diffusion of learning and innovation
- Train staff to enable them to run social media campaigns and write press releases after the mandate is completed.
- Develop a social media handbook for continuity after the mandate is completed
- Provide technical advice and insight on communications
- Create donor communication plans and materials (newsletters, impact stories
- Coordinate all publications such as media publication of articles and press release
Qualification criteria for selection include:
- A Degree in A degree in communications studies, Journalism, or Social Marketing preferred, or a related field such as Development studies, Economics, Political Economy, Social Sciences, Gender and Women’s Rights. Masters in any of the mentioned field will be of added advantage. Master’s University Degree (or equivalent)
- Experience in working on communications, and women’s rights
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in communications, strategy development etc
- Ability to design and develop communication strategies
- Communication, lobbying and advocacy skills
- Experience writing articles.
- Must have exceptional written and verbal communication
- Experience in Gender, Gender Based Violence, and women rights issues.
- Ability to design innovative social media campaigns
- Must be computer literate
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrable experience of producing high-quality, credible, and learning-focused project results
- Ability to produce timely, analytical, and concise reports
- Demonstrated understanding of communication
- High degree of flexibility
- Excellent communication skills (spoken and written) and time management
- Willing to work under pressure with minimum supervision, reliable and punctual
- Must be an excellent team player with networking abilities

- Share the commitment of preventing and addressing sexual misconduct
- In good physical and mental health (medical examination required)
- The volunteer needs to bring their own computer
Personalized support before, during and after the mandate provided by an experienced and welcoming team. The Crossroads’ experience includes the following:
- Monthly living living allowance of approximately 1600 $CAD
