Main Responsibilities
- Co-facilitate the integration of gender considerations and lead initiatives to strengthen women’s participation in capacity building opportunities
- Builds capacity and provides leadership for monitoring community-based results based on quality improvement and performance-based management approach
- Designs, promotes, implements and monitors community-based activities to promote community/household education/awareness on gender equality and violence against women and girls
- Strengthens community-level advocacy efforts to reduce gender inequality and discrimination
- Monitor statistics on gender equality both in terms of programme outcomes and in terms of beneficiaries of interventions and programme delivery in compliance with the COVOG’s Gender Equality policy
- Support communications related to SGBV prevention, gender equality and women’s empowerment, and other gender equality and visibility needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor or Advanced degree in development studies, international development, economics or any related field.
- Demonstrated ability in program design and integrated approaches to community-level gender equality programs and campaigns
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with program staff, implementing partners, civil society organizations, community leaders and local government authorities to implement community-based gender equality programs and locally-led community engagement initiatives
- Proven ability to carry out local level advocacy, capacity building and social empowerment initiatives
- Proven ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with national and local level government officials, stakeholders, NGOs, and implementing partners.
- Excellent management and interpersonal skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize own work with limited supervision.
- Capacity to effectively interact with a multiplicity of stakeholders including senior leaders.
- Assisting the COVOG team with ongoing partnership initiatives and community mobilization strategy
- Ability and willingness to work in rural areas during field visits and willingness to work in a non-Canadian socio-cultural and professional settings
- Proficiency in standard software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required, and an additional language spoken within the region would be advantageous but not necessary
Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner
COVOG is a non-governmental organization that promotes volunteering by Ghanaians as a critical national development tool.
COVOG designs and markets volunteering programs to address national challenges and provides the platform for the sharing of information, skills and experiences. They also provide capacity building opportunities for members, organize and support the curation of volunteering events in Ghana.
Description the volunteer mandate
The volunteer COVOG is looking for with support will provide technical leadership for strengthening engagement and linkages between volunteers, community leaders and community groups in planning, implementing and promoting gender equality. Supports and strengthens community-level gender equality campaigns to build demand for key women’s rights through gender-sensitive interventions and promotion of women empowerment and equality and male involvement, among other interventions
Eligibility criteria

- Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- Willing to conduct fundraising and public engagement activities before, during and after the placement
- Share the commitment of preventing and addressing sexual misconduct
- In good physical and mental health (medical examination required)
- The volunteer needs to bring their own computer.
- The volunteer must be available to attend an online pre-departure training from 16- 25 August 2023.
Personalized support before, during and after the mandate provided by an experienced and welcoming team. The Crossroads’ experience includes the following:
- Daily living allowance (depending of the country of assignment)
- Plane ticket and local transport
- Pre-assignment online training.
