Project description and context:

Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.

The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.

Description the partner & volunteer mandate

The Innovation and Knowledge Management Advisor mandate supports the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA), a key partner organization that plays a central role in promoting women’s rights and gender equality across Ethiopia. As NEWA strives to maintain its leadership in this space, it faces significant challenges in harnessing innovative approaches and strengthening its knowledge management systems. Current gaps in these areas limit the organization’s ability to adapt to emerging challenges, scale its initiatives, and share its impact effectively with stakeholders. Without a systematic approach to knowledge management and innovation, NEWA risks falling behind in a dynamic and increasingly competitive socio-economic and political landscape.

Ethiopia’s current context presents a mix of opportunities and challenges for civil society organizations like NEWA. Rapid socio-economic transformations, gender disparities, and ongoing political shifts demand innovative, evidence-based solutions to address deep-rooted systemic inequalities. The increasing need for accountability, transparency, and responsiveness further underscores the importance of effective knowledge management systems. In addition, as donors prioritize organizations that demonstrate adaptability, learning, and innovation, NEWA must strengthen its internal systems to remain relevant and sustainable.

This mandate is essential for addressing these critical gaps by equipping NEWA with robust innovation frameworks and effective knowledge management systems. The volunteer will work closely with NEWA’s leadership and program teams to develop tailored strategies that foster organizational learning, improve data management, and encourage innovative program design. By creating processes for capturing, documenting, and disseminating knowledge, the mandate will enhance NEWA’s ability to showcase its successes, share lessons learned.
